Tankless Water Heaters

Instantaneous water heaters, which have long been common in Europe and Japan, are now growing in popularity in North America. This is because they can supply and endless stream of hot water, use less energy than a hot water tank, and are made to last 20+ years.

Endless supply of hot water

An instantaneous water heater creates hot water as you use it, and never runs out. Our Bosch 425 EF and 425 HN have 130,000 and 117,000 Btu/h, respectively, and can endlessly supply water for one shower. Those who want to be sure there will not be a shortage of hot water while running two showers/ washing machines/ hot water taps simultaneously should opt for the 175,000 Btu/h GWH 635 ES model.

Energy savings

Most hot water tanks installed today have an energy factor (EF) of 0.63, and older ones usually have energy factors of slightly below .60. This means that, for a house with a average hot water consumption of 64 gallons/day, 63% of the heat created will be used an 37% will be wasted. Our Bosch units have EF’s of between .78 and .85, and are thus estimated to lower hot water heating costs by 19-26% in a home with average hot water consumption. Homes with above average hot water consumption may experience savings of as little as 10% while homes with below average consumption may save up top 50%. Homes with lower hot water consumption save the most because most of their current hot water costs are for keeping the water in the storage tank full, which does not occur with an instantaneous water heater.

Instantaneous units also have much longer lives than hot water tanks. Most hot water tanks now have 8 year warranties and have steel (not stainless steel) tanks which rust through in about 12 years, while our Bosch units have copper heat exchangers, a 15 year warranty, and are expected to last for over 20 years.

Cleaner water

When a steel tank rusts over the years until it finally leaks, pounds of rusty dust gradually enter the hot water supply. A thick layer of mineral scale also builds up in the storage tank over the years, reducing efficiency, and hot water sitting in the tank is an ideal breading ground for bacteria. An instantaneous unit does not have these problems.
